Howard Johnson and Jack Garland examine Couch Surfing, a web-based phenomenon where users build online profiles and share sleeping space on their sofas with other travellers. The story looks at the rise of the most popular couch surfing site and speaks to the founder, before journeying to Japan to try it out in one of the world's most expensive cities - Tokyo.

  • Couchsurfing is not about saving money - its main purpose is to connect people and get a local taste of the place you´re going to.

Personally, if I have get the notion that a request is made (just) to save money, I refuse the request.

Obviously saving is a side-effect, but that´s all it should be.
