How to Adjust Tempo
Pro Tools 9 has the ability to map out your Tempo. This can come in handy if you happen to have a song with multiple, changing tempos. While most songs stick to one tempo, there are some songs that change tempos.
You could also record multiple songs in one session, with each song at a different tempo.
The Tempo map is the green bar in the timeline. Click on the small arrow to the left of Tempo to expand its view and open up the Tempo map.
Say, for instance, you have two different songs in the same session. Song 1 is at one tempo and Song 2 is at another tempo.
Place the play marker at the beginning of the second song and then click the small plus sign that is associated with Tempo to the left of the timeline.
This will bring up the Tempo Change dialog box. Make whatever changes you want to make to the BPM (beats per minute) and click OK.
You can also change the Tempo of a small section of a song and have it return to its original speed by grabbing the Pencil Tool in the top tool bar. For this tutorial, Line is selected.
With this tool, you can map out your tempo by clicking and dragging across the Tempo timeline.
Begin at the section of the song where you would like the tempo to slow down and click and drag to make a downward line.
To have the Tempo return to its original speed, grab the Smart Tool and select the last point of the line made in the Tempo timeline. Drag that line back up to its original Tempo.

I am trying to change the tempo of a popular recorded song for a freestyle routine. While I am able to change the tempo of something I've recorded myself, it doesn't work on recorded music. Can you steer me in the right direction?

Thanks for the info on the tick based track....now, I can get my Click track to change tempos, but the music on an adjoining track doesn't change with the new tempo. What am I missing?

Okay, so apparently I can't link to another YouTube video via comment, so instead just search for Pro Tools 205: Elastic Audio - 03 Samples and Ticks by MacProVideoDotCom.

@MindMushMusicGroup and @purelink1000, Joey is taking advantage of a Pro Tools feature called Elastic Audio, but in order to get your audio tracks to conform to your tempo map, you have make sure to change them from sample based to tick based. Tick based tracks adjust when you change the tempo; sample based tracks do not. Rather than write out a long explanation on how to do this, here's a video that should help. Good luck!

I've spent days trying to get the tempo changes and regions to stay on the grid.
If you put in 3 tempo changes. Then in between two tempo changes, just copy 1 bar about 20 times. Now if you zoom all the way in and look at each region start and end, you'll see they don't line up.
Is that how Pro Tools works, or is there a way to make it line up PERFECTLY on the GRID?

hmm, i tried to do this with one of my songs, but no matter how much i slowed down the tempo, when i clicked play it just was just playing at the normal tempo =/
