The election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United Sates represents an historic American event and a landmark milestone in the story of Iraq.

President Obama's plan to bring US combat troops home in 16 months, however, raises important security questions.

Our guests this week are former US ambassador to Iraq David Newton, who is also a scholar at the Middle East Institute; Peter Harling, the director of the Iraq-Syria-Lebanon Project at the International Crisis Group; and Iraqi elder statesman and member of the Iraqi Parliament Adnan Pachachi.

  • YES!

  • Yeah great barry keep talking shit about the USA

  • every1

PLEASE tell us you are using irony

  • Am I the only one wondering if Obama has even read his own stimulus bill???

  • Amazing that so many people state Iran as though it was a backward state. It is not a backward state, and thye have just gone into space, and are able to make nuclear plants. That is NOT backward.

And believe it or not, their peopel smile and laugh and joike and sing. They are NOT prisoners.

  • I think this was fair and even-handed. That's redundant, but who cares? I hope Iraqis can learn from the Iranian disaster of Fascism Lite and do a better job.

  • The editing of this discussion hurt the debate. I'm not impressed.

The editing cut out some of the most salient points!

Harling AND Pachachi were speaking honestly - stop cutting people off.

  • My favorite quote from my history teacher in High School,"War is the inevitability of a **** up!"

That being said i think there is always a peaceful way we could solve things but war is the fastest route to any sign of getting your point across.

I don't think we should worry but hope!

  • The Iraqis will probably take measures to make sure that won't happen...

Besides, if the Sunni and Shia start killing each other again...what's wrong with that? All war is horrible, as well as inevitable. But if it can be channeled in a way that serves our interest, then should we really worry?

  • It would be terrible anyway you look at it if we pulled out and their country collapsed and it went back to the old ways. And our troops lives were wasted!
