When senior Sherinda Bryant stepped up to the microphone the audience started searching for Simon, Randy and Paula. Im smarter than that! I know Sherinda hates waiting in those ridiculous AI (pronounced "eh aye"... get it...wink,wink) crowds and waiting lines.
You may recall seeing her earlier this year in the 4th Songwriter Showcase: Original songs written and performed by Cal Poly Pomona students and alumni. (Thursday, February 26, 2009, 8:00 PM) along with Candice Brown, Kateri Lirio. And The Polyphonics (Craig Tsurumoto and Jeanette Lawler). Proceeds from the concert go to scholarships for Music Industry Studies students. Good stuff!
Why go to Hollywood, wait in those stupid long lines (with NO GUARANTEE that youll get a seat or even get inside the building), pay $8 per hour parking (if you can find a spot), watch those mindless commercials, and get treated like, well, like sheep. Dr. Kopplin takes pride in his Students and loves to display them in the Cal Poly venue. With the help of his friend, musician, and tonights Guest Artist, Mr. Alex Budman, Alex Budman is an active musician of 20 years with performing experience on all saxophones, clarinets, flutes, electric and acoustic basses. His versatility has allowed him to perform and record with a wide range of artists including Liza Minnelli, Rosemary Clooney, Erykah Badu, The Game, Boz Scaggs, Eric Clapton, Bettye LaVette, The Funk Brothers, Wendy and Lisa, Busta Rhymes, Jesús Díaz, Glide Memorial Church Band and the San Jose Symphony. http://www.alexbudman.com Mr. Budman can be seen on his Website http://www.alexbudman.com and on MySpace.com
Dr. Kopplin arranges still another off the hook performance with Bridge Over Troubled Waters (Paul Simon 1970, arr. Kopplin). His clever arrangement allows Sherinda to show her power, in the manner of all the Great Torch Singers. With the Call-Call-back between Sherinda and Alex, it is reminiscent of the Big Bands with the Lena Hornes, Rosemary Clooneys and Sarah Vaughans. Award-winning Capn Craig Tsurumoto (Englehardt ES-9 UB and funk Alembic bass) and fellow Award winner Jeanette Jeena E Lawler accompany the Band to "rock the House".
