Why I started LandChoices: To inform and inspire landowners and planners to preserve land

http://www.LandChoices.org founder Kirt Manecke discusses why he started the green land conservation group LandChoices. "I watched my favorite childhood woods, fields, wildlife and ponds needless destroyed. I thought there had to be a better way!

After attending a workshop by noted planner Randall Arendt http://www.landchoices.org/about/advisory.htm , I learned about innovative conservation subdivisions http://www.landchoices.org/conservationsubs.htm . They preserve clean water, wildlife and 40% to 70% or more of the buildable natural areas and working farmland, PLUS unbuildable wetlands. They allow the same number of homes and are more profitable than cookie-cutter subdivisions. What's not to like?

After attending workshops on land preservation by Boston tax attorney and author Steve Small http://www.stevesmall.com/ , I learned that up to 90% of landowners are not aware of any other option besides selling their land for development.

With the help of generous friends and donors, we started LandChoices. We inspire landowners, planners, landscape architects and land use advocates.
