This is the opening and closing theme from Walt Disney's 1966 production "Mosby's Marauders. Set near Fairfax Courthouse, Virginia in 1861, and features the swashbuckling adventures of the Gray Ghost of the Confederacy, John Singleton Mosby and his band of Partisan Rangers. Starring a very young Kurt Russell as Private Willie Prentiss, Michael Forrest as General J.E.B. Stuart, and Jack Ging as Lieutenant Mosby. This movie also starred Peggy Lipton from The Mod Squad.

Mosby, by the way, wrote after the war that OF COURSE the war was about slavery. He said he never heard ANY reason OTHER than slavery for the fighting.

Really an amazing statement. He went on to explain that after the war, everyone made up lofty bullshit excuses -- but at the time -- everyone knew and admitted it was about slavery. He said this in a hand written letter to a friend.

I had never heard that, that is interesting. I think down deep inside everyone knew that it was about slavery. After all, that is what separated the culture of the South from the rest of the country.

Not just deep down. It was openly discussed at the time -- until they lost. Then there was a mad scramble to save face.

I will send you some quotes from official documents written BY the Southern states at the time -- something no Southern state teaches ever existed. In official documents, and proud speeches by Southern founding fathers, they claimed from the rooftops it was about slavery. They gloried in bragging about it - till they lost.

Northern businesses paying workers couldn't compete with Southern businesses using slaves, so Northern businesses were willing to finance the (un)Civil War and join with others who simply wanted to end slavery for philosophical reasons... And, of course, Southern businesses wanted to keep slavery and the luxurious lifestyle that went with it... for slaveowners, that is...

@CJurasin (con't) were able to get their plantations assessed at less than their actual value for taxation which meant they never paid their fair share into the South's infrastructure. Yet these same people were the ones complaining about higher tariffs. They seceded when they saw they weren't going to continue controlling the government. Spoiling for a fight, they attacked a Federal installation and then called it "Northern aggression" when Lincoln called for troops as a result. Curious logic.

@CJurasin The South wasn't being dictated to by the North in any way. It was more accurate the other way around--the Southern states had more representation and power in the House than they should have had due to the 3/5 Clause, which allowed them to count their "property" toward their populations. Plus, of course, the South said it was slavery loudly and proudly at the time. Google Southern Ultimatums -- they issued five ultimatums, and SOuthern newspapers reported them with great glee. All give ultimatums were for the SPREAD of slavery, AGAINST the will of the states and the people in the the states.
