Candy was clearly based on Patti Smith. Although it was a

memorable performance, it wasn't that good a satire on Smith, who wasn't

the substance abuser pictured here. More a takeoff on the punk thing happening

at the time.

To Badfungus, good point. She also liked to throw in a little Jagger, I saw the show on Broadway, and some nights it was more Jagger than Patti. Then some nights, she would flip the song, and do Jagger better then Jagger does Jagger. She was such a sweet angel. Very unassuming and friendly on the street. I also saw her at the Village Gate, in "Lemmings", that show was with Bill Murray, John Belushi, Dan Ackrowd, Gilda doing this song, Chevy Chase, and just about the whole original group.

The guitarist is G.E. Smith, who was also her first husband. " Upon his return to the East coast, Smith moved to Manhattan and became the guitarist for Gilda Radner's 1979 Broadway show Gilda Live."

Gilda was such an awesome talent. She plays this drunk, drugged-out punk rocker with such wild, reckless abandon, yet she's totally on top of her game, hitting her cues right on time with the band, dancing frenetically across the width of the stage, skillfully using every part of her body to inhabit the character, physically interacting with the band members, and obviously having a great time doing it all. And they did this bit every night during the Broadway run. She was a true star.
