I don't believe people fall for this crap!!! "If it's not here... if it's here...." yadda yadda. He said absolutely nothing that contained anything other than an old idea that people may or may not cling to in order to accommodate their particular belief system.
Honestly, when it comes to me attempting to understand anything, and particularly why I feel a certain way or why I percieve my reality in the way I do, or what makes up my own perceptions of my "self," I am going with the one who has the PhD in Neuroscience, years to decades of research in the field, and a vast knowledge of human physiology and it's biological underpinnings.
As opposed to an uneducated elderly man from the slums of Bombay, who has some unsubstantiated enigmatic sayings.
... Would we call them illusions? Not necessary, no. However, the "illusion" is more likely to be the simple fact that most people experiencing these do not possess the years of training and education needed to understand what is truely going on during their experiences. In the same way the ancient Greeks explained lightning with Zeus, contemporary spiritualists are explaining their experiences with metaphysics. As we now understand what causes lightning, we are starting to understand this to.
To answer your questions: Yes, I have attempted many times to seek spiritual enlightenment through various means. Gone through a discipline to completion? Depends on how you are defining complete, but likely no.
Can science prove... Science has demonstrated quite thoroughly that the experiences believers get can be explained fully by physiological functions of the neurological system. The change in perception is brought on by demonstrable changes in the brain.
I think, and please don't take this harshly as I mean no offence, that you are just simply ignorant of what modern science is able to and has already explained. These things have been researched quite thoroughly, and the evidence is quite conclusive. There is simply no evidence for, and nothing physical outside of an individual human's thoughts and feelings, to support the existance of anything metaphysical. Believe me, it is definitely not for a lack of trying, from both science and believers.
@IanBillings00, I understand. You see, I would submit to your dismissive attitude of this type of understanding but the problem is, Science is unable to explain metaphysical realities, that does not mean they do not exist or are untrue. Have you ever put yourself through a spiritual discipline to its end? Have you gone through a shamanic ritual? Can science prove the experiences brought on by these practices to be illusions of the mind or distorted versions of reality?...
In a society of long past, or one with limited access to modern science, the teachings of Advaita Vedanta might actually be quite palatable.
However, modern science is proving their hypotheses to clearly be nothing more than uneducated guesses composed to sound acceptable enough to quell the questioner's curiosity and make the speaker seem as though he has some deep understanding.
Modern neuroscience has a real understanding of consciousness, which refuted these "understandings" long ago.
"your materialisitic and dualisitic view of reality"
And how do you know what my view of reality is?
Maharaj's book is very similar in style to the kinds of things we hear from Mr. Chopra. Dan Dennett very cogently describes statements like those found in their books as "Deepities." They sound supremely profound, so earth-shatteringly relevant, and highly truthful, leaving you with many questions to consider. The problem is, that whole "truth" thing doesn't necessarily apply to these...

@IanBillings00 Thank you for your input Sir. Really cogent argument as opposed to Mr Snake Oil Salesman in that video spewing a lot of nonsense.

@IanBillings00, Read the book 'I am that', it will tear apart your materialisitic and dualisitic view of reality.
