  • WOW! Talk about a CLEAR voice! Love it love it LOVE .... IT! Thank you for posting! There really are no singers like this anymore, sadly... :( thank God for these wonderful recordings that saved their voices.

  • @AgnesRegina

Your crystal clear appreciation... THANK YOU!

  • Doug, many thanks to you! This was gorgeous!!! Both music and voice. This Victor 70064? I know she also recorded it in 1906 (Everlasting cylinder) and in 1913 (Rex).

  • Thanks, Alexander! Yes, Victor 70064. How are you aware of the 1906 and 1913 cylinders? The TrueSound CD? A lovely artist, I have a few of her Edison cylinders and a handful of the Victors. Best. Doug --

  • What a beautiful voice! Her timbre is very much like Melba's - albeit with a vibrato.Does anybody know anything about this incredible singer? My search was fruitless, except for a divorce fight with her husband. What happened to her? She was only 37 when she died - what a shame.

  • As mentioned in other postings, the NYT announces her passing without any information on the cause of her death. There's a full article on Agnes Kimball in the now defunct New Amberola Graphic that I'm trying to track down. THANK YOU! Doug --

  • @AulicExclusiva I thought exactly the same think before I read your comment. If you cut off the little light vibrato you have a Melba like voice!

  • Doug, information about Everlasting cyl. № 1520 and Rex (disc) № 1054 from VCCD book. Kimball made 5 titles for Edison cyl. ( wax 867 = BA 1991; wax 925; wax 1007 = BA 2057; BA 1502; BA 1862)and 2 or 3 published Diamond disc (80067 =mx.2034; 80002 & 82001 = mx.812, and 82501=mx.number unknown). I think few cylinder titles dubbed from unpubl. Discs. Also she recorded Edison Disc 80088 Scenes from Maritana, but title finally unpubl, and vere made re-make De Vere-Sapio version.

  • Müller-Rudolph's is rather what one normally hears, very well done. It would be something to have a Melba recording of this!

I love the urgency, indeed passion, which Kimball gives this music, so seldom sung that way. The oft-repeated phrases, that can seem pointless in a typically genteel interpretation, sound thrilling here. Very moving. And what a beautiful, bold tone she brings to it. A wonderful disk by a completely neglected artist. Great posting.

  • Agnes Kimball's performance is dramatic, heroic, powerful but feminine, inspired, and inspirational! She turns a phrase like a gospel singer! Her heady vibrato is not overwhelming but adds to the in- tensity of feeling and expression! Elijah is one of Mendelssohn's sublime com- positions and is proof positive that he was much more than a "salon" composer! Thank you, Doug, for posting another historic treasure!
