Halo 3 - How To Pick Up an Overshield as Equipment

This video explains how to pick up an overshield (or active camo) as equipment to use for later. Unfortunately, pressing 'X' does not deploy it. To use it, swap it for another piece of equipment such as a bubble shield or regenerator. Or, scare your enemies by dropping it upon your death.

This has never been patched.

You have to be non-host and you can ALSO 'switch' overshields with other equipment to deploy them- this can be very useful for strategical purposes and can ensure some funny moments when a mob of enemies rush you and you just take the overshields out of nowhere.
