Half the plays shown in the promo would be penalized today, clotheslining etc.

PHYLLIS GEORGE WAS HOTT!

I Love how just about every clip in the intro is a over the top personal foul. No way in hell would today's NFL allow the NFL Today to run an intro like that.

Bob Costas was on NBC

@ChoralfanUSA Well to be fair, Tampa got Jimmie Giles, Houston's #1 and #2 in '78, their 3rd and 5th in '79, and that pick ended up being Doug Williams. Giles, Williams, and Ricky Bell would end up being the components to get the Bucs to the NFC Title game in two years...similar to Campbell with Houston.

Some things just can't be re-done...the NFL Today is one of them. Just enjoy it for what it was...an entertaining show that was made in a vacuum...when we worried about football on Saturday and Sunday and didn't have everything a player did get scrutinized, evaluated, speculated on, and debated.

Love this as a fan since about '74, but it must be said that it's clear by those opening credits that the NFL and its broadcasters condoned, even glorified the violence ... at 1:11 that drum riff just as that Cowboy gets stomped in the back always cracks me up!

sure is kewl watching how things were back then....and I dare say, better.

Oh, yeah. I know what play your talking about.

I think I counted about 115 yards in penalties and 14 games suspended just in the intro -- I love that clotheslining, face-masking and suplexing were all legal.
How about a 2012 version of "NFL Today" with James Brown (the sportscaster), Erin Andrews, and Bret Farve, along with a telegenic, articulate, and charismatic Vegas sports bookie??
I think such a team could replicate Musburger, George, Cross, and "The Greek".

@altfactor No thanks. But I would think Bob Costas would be a perfect choice to lead a modern day NFL Today team.

These full length NFL Today's from around 1977-1983 are classic. As a kid, this show (and every football Sunday) was better than Christmas. My only comment on this telecast is check out the cheezy segment Phyllis did at 10:30. It was a flashback as it reminded me of those After School Specials from back in the day. In addition, at 10:46 I think it's safe to say that Earl Campbell also saw Isiah Robertson in that position.
