This is a man's song. It was inspired by a goodlooking lad Burns had known in his youth and was saddened to find when he met him again years later that nature had cruelly stripped him of his glorious locks and therefore his beauty. The song raised questions about Burns' sexuality -- which seems a bit narrow-minded and even ridiculous given his fondness for the women. When sung by the right male voice (and so in context) to the right accompaniment, it's hauntingly beautiful and one of his best.

Ah'm scunnert wae Scots singers yasin English in Scots songs. Is it embarrassment that they seek to distance themselves from the language of our fathers? Ah like yer voice hen bit yer cringe is showin.

Shes a good singer but Isobel Baillie is much better at singing this, also Karen Matheson for me is a better singer but Eddi is good also

Totaly addicted to her Burns CD. The Bard's Poetry transformed into Music. Inspiring and truly beautiful. I recited this Poem when I was 10 years old for The Burns Competition. lol

Okie Dokie folks. Here comes that asshole Starr to burst the bubble. My God this woman has such an incredible voice. I watched the video and her EYES. The eyes don' t lie. Here is a woman that is repressed. I can feel in the tone and the eyes that she wants to take the mike and kick the stand and sing it her way. And I would predict, she will just blow you away/.

If anyone wants to hear an especially beautiful version, try to look up John Anderson by Mhairi Lawson.

Keirfree, there are 2 possible translations: one is it's short for joy and the other is that it means sweetheart.
