Sounds like cases of misidentification. I have no doubt that these individuals saw something. But, if it is night, your body is already releasing adrenaline. What about an Owl? What other birds are nocturnal at night? If this is a new species, I find it incredibly odd that no body has turned up within the last several centuries.
