I thought dan grades after the 3rd were time based, assuming you always trained. 4 years for 4th dan, 5 for 5th and so on. Am I wrong about that? Who would grade Kawasoe for 9th dan? I trained with him several times over 3 years. He graded me every time with Ken Taylor. Eventually I gave Karate up, it just wasn't giving me what I wanted. It's actually quite a weird situation I can't explain because on the one hand I regret this decision but on the other I don't.

i recently switched to a new club that practices a slightly different style to traditional shotokan karate, they're alot more focused on the kumite side of karate, and less so on the kata. After gettin my ass handed to me during my first few sparring sessions, we did some kata demonstartions, i did Bassai Dai, and everyone including my sensei was blown away by it, when they asked where i learned kata like that, i told them i learned from Kawasoe, they were like "ahhhh that explains it"

most "Japanese" Organizations" all promote from within their own and it is the higher ranks of the Yodansha, "students" that actually recognize who is at question. After all Rank recognition is a matter of opinion and it does not really play a part in one's learning. After so many years a person develops his own Karate through self discovery about what works for them personally and then that person transfers their discoveries to their students. Promotion is therefore from within at this point.
