A panel including Monterey Institute (MIIS) students and recent graduates share their experience from high school and college and factors that contributed to their decision to study nonproliferation. Sarah Poe, an undergraduate from Middlebury College, is pursuing a graduate degree in nonproliferation at MIIS. As an MIIS student she participated in two internship programs: the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) developed the Critical Issues Forum (CIF) to increase awareness of disarmament and nonproliferation issues and to engage and recruit the next generation of nonproliferation specialists. Specifically, CIF is designed to involve pre-college high school students and their teachers in issues of proliferation and control of weapons of mass destruction. The 2011 CIF Student-Teacher Conference, held in Monterey, CA on April 28-29, included students from Chinese, Russian and U.S. high schools and the theme was nuclear energy and nuclear weapons in the Middle East.
