  • I'm glad our tactics have changed since this fire!! Any fire chief today that would allow this type of carrying on should be put on a wall and shot. But that was then this is now.

  • excuse me, but just exactly what "type of carrying on" are you refering to?

  • Aren't you glad you live today? Think...in about 60 years, the folks then will think our tactics today will look just as ancient!!!

  • It happened during the great depression, dumbasses

  • allowing civilians to man the hoses

  • Great stuff, thanks.

  • I am really glad you are sharing this with us. I did photographs for the city of North Adams MA and now I am a FF/Photographer with Ray City GA. I have been setting things up for future fighters fighters to learn the lessons we did.

  • there was another fire in 2009 actully THREE fires!

  • Exactly THAT my point exactly. We CAN learn from our for fathers

  • Keep in mind...this fire was 70 years ago. How many [other] old fire film's of a THIS era, have you seen to critique their "carrying on" [as you stated]? Remember, there were NO aerial devices, Chemox or radios then. The fire started in the coal bin in the basement; the building didn't collapse; all of the hotel guest's were safely evacuated.

  • Wa3ypx, Right on man! I know some departments that have not done an update to their SOP/SOG's since the year this fire happend! Their are some guys who would use the same tactics on a high rise that they use on a two story residential! I have actually seen guys drag "booster" line into a High rise! The problem is not the guys, its the dept. chief's. If a fire chief does not respect the need for training and continuing education then he/she puts the dept. at a severe disadvantage! can you dig it?

  • Also no SCBA's not that they had them, but Chemox units where available. I seen one guy coughing up a lung! Think somethings wrong? I have been in the fire service many years, 23 as an officer and instructor. I don't fault these guys, but what I do fault is depts. I see today who haven't varied from these same tactics. This is the purpose behind Goldfetters drum beat. Please look at my last statement on the original post. "That was then this is now>'
