The two most plausible theories I've heard is that the cost of reviving life (and that the dragon could even be YOU, the player) is that you are blind during the whole ending sequence, but you can hear everyone. (Hey, "Tim" is over there!)

The second one would be that Lucas wished everyone to die peacefully to make up for everything

So...this game essentially ends in about the same way A Link to the Past does - with the protagonist wishing his world to be back to the way it started, before all this chaos took place?
