The Ohio Chapter of the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease invited its 82 partners to provide testimony during a hearing in Cleveland and Columbus to the national platform committees of both political parties.
On the whole these organizations recognize that chronic disease accounts for more than 75% of every dollar spent on health care in America. Chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease, cancer, hypertension, obesity and depression kill 7 out of 10 Americans every year. In Ohio, 6.7 million citizens have a chronic disease, more than half of our total population.
The testimonies provided consistently asked that the national platform committees recognize the very real consequences of chronic disease to our system of health care. Any health reform policies must begin with an understanding of the rising trends in diabetes, obesity, cancer and heart disease. Unless these trends are acknowledged and policies are put forth to address them, we cannot sustain meaningful and lasting changes to the delivery of health services in America.
Our PFCD partners in Ohio advocate for better awareness and implementation of wellness programs, personal health responsibility and chronic disease prevention and management.
Among those groups participating in the hearings included: the Ohio Hospital Association, the Cleveland Clinic, Cuyahoga County Board of Health, Columbus Department of Public Health, Ohio Dietetic Association, The Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital, Ohio Nurses Association, Ohio Public Health Association, Ohio Health Commissioners Association and the Ohio Association of Parks and Recreation,
