There was an earlier "non-celebrity" version of this with a guy playing the guitar and singing the song, and his version was much faster. It had more of a "country" feeling to it. That's probably what you're remembering.

I remember singing this song with a bunch of other kids on a road trip in August 1978 when I was 11. I remember it being a little more upbeat though, maybe there's a 2nd version?
