This week, I tour a new favorite, Piranha Bytes' 2001 classic Gothic. I didn't play this game when it came out, and now regret it. After a rather slow start, this game picks up in intensity and becomes a must-play for any true CRPG fan. I loved it and hope you will, too.

If you want to buy Gothic, my advice is to get it from GOG. Use my link, and I get a little kickback at no extra cost to you!

Special thanks to Stuart Feldhamer! Stuart, thanks so much for recommending this brew. I love it! Learn more about Brooklyn Brewery here:

  • @blacklily8 Please don't get rid of the "ale of the week" segment!!! I usually try the brews after watching your episode. Keep up the great work! PS - How do we make a contribution to the show AND how can we suggest an ale for you to try?

  • @MrSgtpepper24 It's on the channel page, but you can also to go Armchair Arcade and look for the Matt Chat link. If you make a donation, don't click too fast--there's a message button there you can input a beer recommendation.

  • For anyone new to this game that is playing on a newer OS like Vista or Win7, you may be confused as to why there is apparently no music. There is a patch that fixes this problem, and trust me, you don't want to play this game without music, it does a lot to enhance the overall atmosphere.

  • @matternicuss I noticed that somehow my music was simply turned off. I went into the settings and turned it back on. Not sure how that happened, but I agree, the music is excellent and well worth listening to.

  • Glad you liked the beer - I was half imagining that you were going to do a spit take after you tried it. ;)

  • @feldhamer Ha! That's alcohol abuse. I actually quite like it. I have some other flavors here I intend to get around to eventually. It's great brew.

  • Answering your question, IMO the best game in the series is definitely the second one with an extension called Night of the Raven. It is a massive piece of work, adding to this great game a whole new region to explore and lots of cool quests along with a new fraction (pirates!). It makes Gothic2 more challenging than the G2 itself (enemies become tougher), but it's totally worth it. Check it out Matt, you shouldn't be disappointed. Oh, and in spite of how it looks, I'm not German - I'm Polish :)

  • Keep ale of the week for sure -- craft beer is great, it's at the end of your episodes, and it definitely gives them even more character.

  • this would be lots better without the annoying fail-at-humor commentary, just explain about the game without trying to be funny, u know what ur talking about but completely spoil it and make it aggravating to watch, kinda like being forced to watch commercials on tv

  • ale of the week is a great small segment! People actually request you stop it? Man, the sense of entitlement people have O_o

Gothic is such a great game, the sequel is pretty good too.

  • now then, everyone will tell you to stay far away from Gothic III, but if you apply the Community Patch, then you can enjoy that release as wel

do note how many of the things present in this game (Gothic 1) has been "ported" to TES V - Skyrim, which is kind of ridicoulus how long it took for Bethesda to implement something remotely similar

I do enjoy Gothic 1 best, but that's probably because I've spent the most time with it compared to the second and third

    and remember, Gothic 4, isn't

  • huh i got the Gothic univerise (1, 2, 3 and all expansion) for £4.99 at a local store :)

  • I think I like Gothic 2 best as well. The world grew quite a bit it (it even includes some of the old world, now changed), it adds more diversity (farmland, coastal region, grander landscapes) and dragons!

All in all, I enjoyed every game from Prinanha Bytes and getting antsy for Risen 2. Be sure to get the latest version though and beware of the Gothics that were not developed by PB (Forsaken Gods and Arcania), they are said to be pretty awful. I didn't play either yet, so I can't say for sure.

  • I vote to keep the brew segment. Also, don't listen to the people bagging on your sense of humor.

  • I don't even drink but I think you should keep the ale of the week. Cheers!

  • Hey Matt, just thought I should put a little request out there for a game I think you should TOTALLY play. It's called Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl, and while it may not be a true RPG or cRPG, it's a game I think you would really enjoy. It's very slow paced and atmospheric, and is actually semi-realistic for what it is. I would love to see you do a video on it, or on Call of Pripyat, which was my most favorite of the franchise.

  • Oh, and by the way , keep the "ale of the week" segment, that's probably the only reason i try to watch even your retrospectives, that i don't really enjoy.
