As an ex Safeway employee I would rather see this set to "Ding-Dong the Witch is Dead"

Damn how small is your town that you are that upset over a Safeway closing. I would hate to see what you would do if they closed the local Canadian Tire and Tim Hortons

Wow, didn't know there were Safeway stores in America!

It's like losing a old friend when you have to watch it get torn down. I live on GUAM and safeway was discontinued in 1992 or 93.

good i hated this grocery store

Here in Wisconsin, we used to have a grocery store called "Kohl's Foods." they were sold off to A&P in 1983. They closed their last store in 2003.

I live in the US, and the Marina style Safeway is becoming an endangered species here as well. I wish they would declare some of these stores as historic monuments and restore them (the buildings) to their original condition, yet update the technology to today's standards for store operations. I have an old Sweda mechanical cash register that originally came out of a Safeway store here in the States that was in use during the 1960s and 70s.

@super8film Safeway closed all their stores in England in 2005 when it was bought by Morrisons. When you get used to shopping somewhere you like to be able to continue to do so. Safeway was one of the first shops I remember going into as a kid, my father used to work at our local store many years ago.

Eh?
Why did it close?

@97Siren - Safeway consolidated stores in the core area and this being an older building was the one deemed expendable. As an update - they have just begun renovating the building to what looks to be several commercial spaces. The rumour being that they will square off the marina roof and lower it. That still leaves one Safeway Marina type building in town still operating as a Safeway.

They did not completely square it off but they cut back the front overhang which removed the uplift "wings" off to the sides. Pretty nice looking space though, with three shop spaces and a fair amount of glazing (but not the floor to ceiling as the marina style had). Kudos to the developers for utilizing rather than tearing down.

@super8film There are still a couple old Safeway marina style stores operating under different names in Omaha, Nebraska. Safeway pulled out of Omaha in the mid 1980's. They look the same now as they did back then. Except for the name.

@cooltay92 ...they are good looking buildings, so other than sort of being a Safeway "brand" (which might be a negative for someone using the building to sell their own "brand"), it makes sense to me to use them without much if any modification. Good for Omaha.

are you seriously THAT UPSET because a store closed? Is the new one far away?

@garycalgary..actually, the music I had to switch to thanks to WB is probably what prompts your comment. It is pretty bombastic on a certain level. But, I admit to being a sentimental old fool just the same.
