As the Aker Yards in the eastern German towns of Wismar and Warnemünde get a Russian owner, a newly built giant ice breaker for the Barents Sea is brought out - a symbol of many new orders likely to come from Russia.
The Norwegian Aker Yards had sold the two shipyards for 250 million euros, retaining a 30 percent share in the hopes of gaining access to the Russian market. The new owner, FLC, is an investment company largely controlled by the Russian state, which is hoping to gain knowhow in strategic industries like shipbuilding. Now representatives of FLC are assuring staff at the yards that the deal will guarantee them work for the next decade. But should workers really believe that the yards will stay in Germany? Our reporter Holger Trzeczak went to Warnemünde to see the new investors make their appearance.
