FAVELA RISING documents a man and a movement, a city divided and a favela (Brazilian squatter settlement) united. Haunted by the murders of his family and many of his friends, Anderson Sá is a former drug-trafficker who turns social revolutionary in Rio de Janeiro's most feared slum. Through hip-hop music, the rhythms of the street, and Afro-Brazilian dance he rallies his community to counteract the violent oppression enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by corrupt police.

At the dawn of liberation, just as collective mobility is overcoming all odds and Anderson's grassroots Afro Reggae movement is at the height of its success, a tragic accident threatens to silence the movement forever.

  • Well brazil is amazing I my self would love to be Brazilian. But knowing this I think brazil needs a lot if work to do I didn't know it was that dangerous but u guess it is I don't understand how they r having the olympics there in Rio of all places wow. I was planning to move to Rio when I am done with college but having second thoughts now. But I love that city u only been there once but dang I love brazil. So sad to see this side of BR

  • @theshark2005 First this happen only in Rio de Janeiro, not in the whole country, second there are many safe places in Rio with HDI higher than many european cities, and like in 2007 pan american games, Rio will be the safest city in the world, Third you can be a victim of violence in any part of this world, for instance my uncle went to vancouver in 2009 , and he was robbed by a gunman.fourth the police took over many favelas, things are getting better now.

  • @theshark2005 I know what you mean and thanks for the info, but I think to fix all that problem the Government would have to work really hard to fix it, I mean there are thousands of those drug lords, tell me how that will go away in mater or years, wow. And I still love Brazil so that doesn't change anything now, I think. I just think that i need to be more careful and safe, like you said there are many bad places so yeah .

  • @theshark2005 The drugdealers wont go away, they will keep selling drugs, not carrying heavy weapons anymore. btw tell me what country got rid of them? The world is fucked up, not just Rio or Latin america. for sure where you live theres violence also.

  • In Brazil there are really like various societies. In the cities the upper and middle classes enjoy a very nice life.Better than in America even. Brazil is a very beautiful country and very nice to visit however. Many people are very friendly and outgoing. Even though I knew it was some crime in Brazil I didn't know it was like this.

  • @theshark2005 Sao Paulo is safer and kind of a fun city but there are no beaches. I'm sure however they'll clean up Rio for the olympics.

  • @theshark2005 a lot of the crime however is due to poverty and a lack of opportunities. In brazil it seems if you're born poor unless your a soccor star or entertainer you really don't have many opportunities. until the economy includes all people it will continue like this.

  • @theshark2005 When I was in Brazil in 97-98 I visited Rio a couple of times. Rio is fine during the day and okay until about 9 at night but there was some danger. we saw some guys dealing drugs at our hotel and a creepy man followed us as we were walking to our hotel in ipanema because he thought we were prostitutes. we had to throw rocks at him to get him to leave. I don't know how it is now. In rio the favelas are all on hills and fairly isolated from the city however.

  • does guys like him get left out? Come to Norway and we would take good care of him ;) Lol

  • eu vou mostra pro mundo o nosso brasil..... olha os meu video

  • there is a ghetto all over the world shit stays the same no matter where..... but damn what a nice loking place i wanna go there someday....no matter wat goes on

  • with the uzi PRRRAAAAAAAAA :s

  • @lamaibeach1 for I will i am getting prepare to move there for one year or more, i know Brazil will grow a lot in the years to come, and the world will see brazil as a power house. well i know this for sure. Brazil has so many natural resources and is fill with people that look forward, i am for sure want to be part of this. after this decade brazil will be on top for sure.
