I am a teacher, but in the adult sector. Personally, after working in various sectors including self employed, i feel adequately rewarded for my input. But anybody that takes on the challenge of teaching in schools is a hero! I really couldn't cope with that, and neither could most of the population. I have lots of paperwork, but school teachers are strangled by it! Also the behaviour and attitudes of the pupils is disgusting now. No surprise that recruiting new teachers is so difficult.
