The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was a long-range single-seat fighter aircraft that entered service with Allied air forces in the middle years of World War II.

The P-51 flew most of its wartime missions as a bomber escort in raids over Germany, helping ensure Allied air superiority from early 1944. It also saw limited service against the Japanese in the Pacific War. The Mustang began the Korean War as the United Nations' main fighter, but was relegated to a ground attack role when superseded by jet fighters early in the conflict. Nevertheless, it remained in service with some air forces until the early 1980s.

As well as being economical to produce, the Mustang was a fast, well-made, and highly durable aircraft. The definitive version, the P-51D, was powered by the Packard V-1650, a two-stage two-speed supercharged version of the legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, and was armed with six .50 caliber (12.7 mm) M2 Browning machine guns.

  • absolutely the best fighter of WW2 was the P-51D Mustang, and it is estimated close to 5,000 enemy aircraft were shot down by this aircraft in WW2, amazing!

  • What rot the Narrator says! The British never asked for a new design. They wanted P-40s in numbers. Curtiss couldn't deliver, so they asked NAA to produce the P-40 for them, and Kindelberger said they'd make a much better fighter in the time it would take to set up a P-40 line.

  • @Zajuts149 right this narrator is a peice of queen pride work fuck him

  • fuck that birtish bloak saying it was almsot created by accident

  • The P51 was an excellent aircraft but actually came in a close second to the P47 in all around performance by the top engineers and test pilots. The P47, though not quite as fast, was far more versatile and rugged, able to keep the pilot safe. The Mustang, although a great plane and faster, was not as good at ground attack and was extremely vulnerable to cooling system damage and engine seizure because its cooling system was so far to the rear. One hole in the cooling system and you walked home

  • the p-51 was the best american fighter of the war but i think the f.w.190 dora or long nose was better. by the time the mustang came to the war the germans had lost alot of there best pilots and their training program was cut short due to low fuel supplies.

  • anyone coult tell me wich music is that?

  • @lodhol even more ironic.

  • @elvee88 not in military way,but they supplied Germany with iron,so they are collaborators in a way

  • @lodhol especially funny since he's swedish, and as u may know sweden wasnt involved in the war.

  • @FishyMikeBravo wow,you have such a little knowledge of history,US didnt save alone Europe, they had big part in pacific, but medium small in europe

  • @AFBrat77 No it wasnt. It was excellent fighter with great speed, range, and armament, but they were better fighters.Such as FW 190D,or Yak-3 (which you have never heard of I suppose),me 262 A-1a
