How did KFC go under the name Champs in certain parts of the US of A?

As a small child growing up in Winnipeg in the 1980s, I remember (mostly older) people referring to KFC as "Champs Chicken", but could figure never out why. And now here it is again. What exactly was Champs (the delivery service?), and what was their relationship to KFC?

@kinoreklame Champs was the Kentucky Fried Chicken franchisee for Manitoba. A lot of regional franchisees used to have their own names for a KFC restaurant.
