i usually go for the magnet however when i only find a few flakes i can get em out with a pair of tweezers
is a couple of flakes good for just one cup of dirt? im finding about 1 1/2 teaspoons of black sand every time (im not dredging) just shoveling dirt, classifying it and panning it out

i live near spanish fork, i go up a canyon i wont name, but i find gold there without a sluice, just a pan and i find alot of silver and platinum. theres alot of gold here in utah, you just gotta find it ;)

I went us a few weeks ago and it looks like they have changed the regulations now in that canyon. I need to make some calls and see if I can find out what the laws are now for small operation dredging and panning.

Thanks! It is a fun and exciting outdoor activity, even for young children to get them involved in the out of doors! Go out and find some!

Seperating out the fine gold can be a lot of work and there are several methods for doing it. From drying the black sands out and using a magnet to remove out the metals other than gold, to amalgamation, the method of using mercury to take the gold out of the remaining black sands. BE CAREFUL AND MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING! The Gold Prospectors Association is a great resource and you can find them online.
