  • this story is so misleading. Hooker fought the township for quite a while saying it was totally inappropriate for any kind of residential development. The township threatened to sue Hooker, so they sold it for $1 with an explanation of the land's previous use and t he township used it anyway. Don't blame Hooker for this, blame government.

  • @ajl22586 From 3:10 on. Just listen to the video. They were told about the chemicals before the sell

  • I like the name...Love Canal...

  • @scilabo All of these people want to blame hooker because they can't accept that the gov doesn't care about them either.

  • @christo930 that would've been intelligent. It's just disgusting the non-chalance with which development went along...

  • @scilabo They had no choice, they were being sued. Rather than spending millions of dollars fighting a lawsuit they were going to lose anyway, they sold the property. Had I been running The Hooker Chemical Company when this was going on, I would have put out a full page advertisement in the local paper, that the city was trying to build a school on hooker property where chemicals were buried.

  • @scilabo They sold it because it was going to be taken away regardless and the company wanted to absolve itself from the consequences by adding the disclaimer to the sale. I think it was stupid of them to dump chemicals like that, but they shouldn't take the majority of the blame when they warned of the possible consequences many times before.

  • @christo930 Oh please. Hooker sells the property for 1$ because it was a desperate attempt to place responsibility to someone else. Despicable.

  • Thanks for this video I had to write an essay about problems that were caused in the great lakes and couldn't any topics but this is great thanks alot!

  • So many people live close to it. Just think of kindergardeners thinking those chemicals were puddles and they played in the chemicals. So sad.

  • @MrCamarra From what I know, the initial dumping was legal at the time. From what I know, the school board (or the city) threatened to sue Hooker and that is why the deed has the disclaimer on it. What kind of idiot politician would build a school site on a chemical company's dump site? Hooker probably had legal reasons they didn't want to tell. From what I have read, I put all of the blame on the township/school board. What happened to the kids now that they are grown?

  • @christo930 actuallly, the real blame lies with the City of Niagara Falls Board of education. Was hooker initially responsible for the dumping, yes, they all were, BUT Hooker knew the dangers, and warned any potential buyers..the city was booming with people and the city needed to build schools..they knew the dangers but disregardered the warnings..I am a former resident, i was there..I lived it..these are the facts...like it or not
