these are in Iosco county Michigan. All over the place, trust me, I see tons of the birds. I have them at a suet feeder as well. Around this area in Michigan is the only place that I have every seen this birds. really cool bird and maybe becoming rarer and rarer.
I've seen exactly one of these critters in the wild about twenty years ago, here in the western most part of their range. Nice vid. Wish they were more common around here.
Nice vid. As a naturalist, I try to appreciate all wildlife equally, but this is hand down my favorite bird species. It stinks that it has become rare in the northeastern US (I live in PA) and has fallen off in numbers elsehwere. That said: I have been to parts of the Southeast, including parts of coastal SC and the Florida panhandle, where these birds are abundant in appropriate habitat (semi-open pine-oak woodlands, swamps with lots of scattered dead trees).
They're beautiful woodpeckers.I've heard they are rather rare in some places.
