the 2.2 and the 2.5 hardly ever gave any valve train problems, but what they were bad about was wrist pin wear around 100,000 miles and that what it sound like to me. or from what i can make out.
lol i know this was posted over a year ago... but for others who may hear stuff like that....
sounds EXACTLY like an open exhaust or exhaust leak (noisey loud clunking diesel truck sound) similar in description to a rod knock But this is definately not one.
along with a bad pulley bearing probably the power steering pump possibly idler pully (whinning sound that changes tone with the rev) unfortunately you didn't mention exactly which noise you were talking about.
My brother owned a '87 Daytona Pacifica with a turbo 1 motor....I think its your lifters tapping. My brothers Pacifica would do it for a min or so when the car was cold but it would go away after the car warmed up. Had about 230,000 miles on the car, its long gone now, sold to some teenagers...found in junkyard 3 months later...spray painted black.
check your altenator,or water pump, the alt bearing can be misaligned, and it makes the noise, water pumps fins inside can wear or break i had my alt fly thru my trucks hood, my father double wrapped the belt, he did it his way
if the engine has full floating mahle pistons it could have lost a cir clip.the wrist pin will walk into the cylinder wall and destroy it. you will lose compression, get alot of blowby and see smoke out the tailpipe.if you dont have any blowby its either piston slap or rod knock.on an 8 cyl you can check for rod knock by pulling plug wires, but on a 4 banger you cant pull plug wires.

I had the piston rod shoot right through the block on my daytona 89' ES. Sounded pretty close to that.

Fix the bad exhaust leak and go from there.
