@Drafty01 - I do my two golden retrievers and they both lie down when they see me coming with the gloves but I find it may be easier this way. If I insert my right finger and do the left gland it takes a few minutes because the hole where the fluid comes out gets crusted over like a glue top - after I finally get that one I gently turn my finger inside and grab the right gland upside down - in this position it seems to empty much easier. If your dog is eating grass check the glands

it is not the most pleasant thing to do but if your dog's glands are full, they are very uncomfortable and my golden retrievers just don't feel good. After doing it enough I am use to it but I feel good my dogs feel better after. So I guess it's all in how much you love your dog.

I'm trying to find the best way to do this as our dog has a bit of a problem like this as well. She's a bit of a small and also nervous dog, so I'm not sure how easy this will be on her. Retro looks a bit put out, but I bet she's a lot happier now...
