Bill Russell Teaches Defensive Rebounds

The Sixers, Royals, Hawks, and Lakers were all quite capable of knocking off the Celtics. But people think that just because they won that many meant the competition was weak, and it actually wasn't. And when you have more than 8 teams you'd expect a variety of winners (like in the 70s) assuming the talent was better overall and evenly distributed to make for even greater competition. But in the last 20 years there's been 3 out of 30 teams with 3+ championships.

@bordertown And the 60's had 1 dominant team. Nobody back then was close to Boston. Even in their tight series they'd get to game 7 and win every single time. Why? Because they were clearly better than everyone. In the 80's there wasn't a dominant team (there were several), and there hasn't been in this decade either (after Shaq was traded by LAL).

@bordertown True but the comment you referred to was my saying that those Celtics teams would never win all those championships today, as well as commenting on how I think Russell would translate to 2012. That means that if you have a time machine with which to transport that team to the 21st century, they couldn't dominate today's NBA the way they dominated that NBA. They'd be slow and short. The eyes test will tell anyone that.

@Hegone81 That's kind of a poor statement to make because you can't compare players of different eras like that so easily. But fact is it doesn't matter how "better" you say today's players are because dynasties define eras. Winning 3 in a row isn't impossible no matter how many teams or how better players are. Bulls and Lakers did it in a 30 team league. I guess they were weak eras? The 70s is the only decade that did not have a dominant team capable of winning almost every year.

@bordertown Well the bad teams were better for sure, but the best teams were dominant. Also, the good players stuck out a lot more because the average player couldn't hold the jock of the average player today. Those Celtics teams had a significantly stronger team than everyone else. Nobody has won more than 3 in a row at any time since those teams, and for good reasons. The players are better today, and there is more parity among the top teams.

How has the league been all that more competitive before or since? Winning that many isn't impossible in any era because there's usually a dominant team. Magic's Lakers went to the Finals 9 times in 11 years, Jordan's Bulls 6 times in 8 years, Kobe's Lakers 7 times in 10 years, etc. People think it wasn't competitive back then because Russell's Celtics won so many, but it certainly was. Even many of their conference and finals wins were decided by slim margins.

Of course he wouldn't win 11 rings in 12 years or anything like that, because the league has been too competitive for any team to get that stacked for 25 years now. He'd be good enough to be the best player on a championship team though. Also, no 25 rebounds today either. A lot fewer shots to rebound, better rebounding guards, more long rebounds because of 3's, etc. He'd rebound like Rodman, except he's 6'10 not 6'8.
-
Oh he totally could play today. From what I've seen of old games, etc- if he were around today you'd have a player who had the passing skills of a Webber or Malone, rebounding ability of Rodman, shot blocking of a Mourning or Howard. He'd be a force. My guess is he'd average about 14 points, 15 rebounds, 3-4 blocks, 5 assists, 2 steals every season. The ultimate team player with the same type of versatility to cover for teammates weaknesses that Jordan had.

BASED BASED EVERYTHING BASED!

This is slightly homoerotic
guys say Russell couldn't play today.... but him and Wilt INVENTED modern basketball... positioning, boxing out, timing all came from the brains of those guys fighting each other off and to this day nobody has done it better.
As strong as Shaq was you saw him standing around not boxing out and just reaching for the ball.... while Rodman was slamming after that thing like a madman and running off with it. Love is the same way
