Back around the year 2000, company VM Labs developed technology which was used in several DVD players from Samsung, Toshiba and RCA - called "Nuon", this new tech brought enhanced DVD playback features as well as 3D gameplay to the home. In late 2001, VM Labs filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and was forced to sell off the technology. This cinematic short showcases the hardware and software of the Nuon that at the time was a promising new technology, but never quite made it off the ground.

:: Direction, creation and cinematography by Aaron Nanto
:: Featured Music: "Cerebral Passage" by Danny Cocke
:: Camera: Sony Super 35 NEX-FS100
:: Lens: Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 50mm f/2 ZF.2

  • Another fine video. Never even seen one of these in person, but nicely done!

  • @bernielindell Thank you much!

  • These look like the worst games ever, mobile phones have 100x better games now, why would anyone buy these?

  • @shushko69 Remember, this was released back in the year 2000. Nobody had smartphones back then.

  • @Reaperman4711 You post a comment on my video, it's going to stay up. You said: "Wow is this video ever not my style. It's trying so hard that it forgets that it's just a few 5-second soundless clips padded out."

    While I welcome your opinion, I didn't "forget" anything. The purpose the short was to create a quick cinematic promo featuring a not-so-well-known gaming platform. Game shots were short on purpose and were not meant to be in-depth (look elsewhere on YT for that).

  • @SitarKnight I've not owned one personally, but it would be very cool to cover it - however showing games being played back on the screen would be tough unless I could get a video out on a device somehow.

  • @Pcenginefx So you like the Wonderswan Color? :)

  • @jedahdoma While there are (quite many) other gaming devices that did much better in the market than the Nuon, I tend to gravitate to covering gaming consoles/devices that either had a short shelf life, niche market, or no market in the United States (say a console only released in Japan or Europe). One of these days I’ll cover a mainstream console, but there are many lesser known systems that I'd like to cover.

  • Love your cinematography, though your subject is a bit meh for me. A cool DVD player with very below average games? I personally feel there are many other gaming devices that would be more deserving of attention IMO.
