Intrinsic is a site dependent audio and light installation that explores minimal sound, audio and visual
perception through a changing aural landscape. Dimensions of the space govern the configuration of the installation. A series of sine waves are played through one full-ranged loudspeaker placed at one end of the space. The frequencies of the sine waves correlate to the dimensions of the space and create standing waves or room modes.
A series of light tubes are hung from the ceiling. Attached to each light tube is a visible microphone
capsule. Through the capsules, each light tubes brightness correlates to the varying amplitude created by the resulting peaks and troughs (nodes and antinodes) from the standing waves. As the amplitude reaches its peak or antinodes, the light tube hanging at that position in the space grows dimmer. When the space is quiet or silent, the tubes are at their maximum brightness.
As viewers enter the pitch-dark room through a long dark corridor, their eyes begin to slowly adjust to the shifting white light intensities that seem to be hovering in the space. Their ears perceive changing loudness of different electronic sound materials resulting from the way they navigate through the space.
