Sakharov Prize: fighting for a better world

Since 1988 the European Parliament has awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to exceptional individuals or organisations fighting injustice and oppression throughout the globe, from South Africa to Belarus, from Cuba to Bangladesh. 2007 finalists were named on 24 September:

Deceased Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya
Sudanese lawyer Salih Mahmoud Osman
Chinese dissidents Zeng Jinyan and Hu Jia.

The real winner of the 2008 Sakharov Prize should be Muntadhar al-Zeidi, the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at Gitmo Bush, for his fight against Western aggression and human rights abuses in Iraq.
