I forgot to mention...I first worked in the USA hospital system for 20 years and then another 2 years in Australia before attending my first home birth. It was so different from anything I had ever witnessed and beautiful beyond description. Home birth for me, was seeing birth as it 'should and could be' for the very first time in my life, it was liking waking up in a new universe. Thank you universe :)

I am 16 weeks pregnant and I am looking at a natural hospital birth. I had a c-section with my son 5 years ago and I didn't feel like myself for 6-9 months. The scar would still ache from time to time. I would rather be in pain for a few days then be healing for a year.

Thank goodness for Ricki Lake making this movie. People turned to home birth because of this. I hope the US will start to see a shift in how/where babies are born:) Homebirth and midwives deserve a lot more respect.

Even though I don't believe you are seeing the whole picture and I'm disappointed at your refusal to consider current research, I also see that your opinion is based out of true concern for the wellbeing of others. I'm thankful you take this seriously and that your hospital birthing preference is readily available to you- it is so important for the mother to feel comfortable and safe when the time comes. Hospitals aren't wrong- they're just not right for everyone. Wishing you the best.

Sigh. This is not a discussion but a broken record. Annually 40 million Americans drive under the influence. 71% of us admit to talking/texting on the phone while driving. In some places, it's popular to eat tape worms to lose weight. The popularity of a practice has zero bearing on its safety. I am NOT implying that hospital birth is akin to any of the practices listed above- I'm demonstrating that your logic is flawed- "common" or "popular" does not always equal "healthful" or "best for all."

American women are uninformed and SCARED. We do what our parents and friends and doctors tell us to. Many women are still questioned and face hostile reactions for wanting to breastfeed past 6 weeks! Insurance no longer covers home births, though they are MUCH more affordable and you can not go back and get a do-over on that bonding experience that is lost when docs intervene for the money in their pockets! You can get some scary infections in hospitals, and the only thing safer is the doc is nearby if something goes wrong. The amount of chemicals pumped into your body (and your baby via the umb. cord) is ridiculous, in many hospitals you don't have a choice you are automatically put on certain meds. They also say you're endangering your child by delaying/refusing vaccines. Yup, lets pump our kids full of mercury and other poisons and pat ourselves on the back for doing what the doctor told us to.
