HARD FOUGHT COLLECTION OF OLDSMOBILE POLICE CARS. THANKS TO THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL THE 1967 DELMONT 425 WAS EVIDENTLY THE PEAK OF OLDS POLICE CAR PROWESS LEADING INTO THE 68 YEAR WITH A BETTER ENGINE IN THE 455. THE 68 AD AT 2:36 WARNS IN THE LAST PARAGRAPH THAT CALIFORNIA AND MISSOURI ARE USING OLDS AND NOT TO TRY AND OUTRUN THE COPS BECAUSE THESE CARS WILL EAT YOU ALIVE.

Speed and Supercar Magazine, 1968 interview with Oldsmobile police equipment engineer Ted Louckes:S&S: Do you use hopped-up engines in your police cars?
LOUCKES: Not in the standard packages. But we offer optional "Police Apprehender" engines for both the F-85's and big cars that are highly recommended for highway work. For the F-85's we use just the regular 400-cubic-inch 442 engine with high compression, big-valve Toronado heads, Quadrajet carb, 286-degree hydro cam and dual exhausts. For the big cars we use pretty much the same package, but on the 455 cubic inch block. This latter combination, incidentally, is not offered in any of the passenger cars. It's a very strong engine. We have no trouble meeting the CHP requirements of standing-start acceleration to 125 mph in two miles with either engine.
S&S: What do you see in the future for police car development?
LOUCKES: It's pretty much a problem of designing police cars with considerably better performance, handling and braking qualities than the hotter cars on the road. We can do this as long as the government agencies that buy the cars are willing to pay the necessary price. But we're more concerned right now with future federal safety legislation and how it might affect police cars. For instance, what if all cars, including police cars are required to have 80mph speed governors in a couple of years? How could the police overtake a speeder? We're afraid of laws like this because we've seen how the new brake requirements have affected the use of sintered metalic brake linings. It could happen again.

  • Great Vid David, don't know how this video slipped by me for this long. And some of these cars are for Mr. Smartass Corvette thinking all he needs to outrun the cops is hitting his top-end, not today buddy.

  • @1967PmdGto Thanks. Hard to round up these photos.

  • Hey There, Thanks for posting such a great video. I have both a '67 and '68 Delmont. Sadly both cars were family cars and not police cars.I am hoping one day to find one with the police cruiser package and restoring it. Again thanks for posting such a great video highlighting some of Oldsmobiles forgotten cars.

  • great video, I really like the mid to late 60s full size Oldsmobiles, the ones with the 455's are sure powerful motors on par with the smaller muscle cars of the era, 1970 was definitely the peak of the classic cars

  • @vistacruiser67

    I hear ya on the hard, but your hard work is greatly appreciated. --I even got my dad (had a 50 Olds 88 for his 1st car) to watch this video and he was very thankful for getting to see it. He's not into ytube or anything like that at all. He remarked ""Cool stuff. My gawd, the massive bumpers alone must have weighed as much as the VW bug I was driving along about then!!"". Back in the 60s/70s my folks always had 1 econo car and 1 larger powerful car, the best of both worlds.

  • Nice vid. I do wonder why in 1967, California HP specified manual steering (white steering wheel) in their cruisers. That must have been a real pain for the patrol officer when a sharp turn was necessary or quick handling. Anyway, great collection of olds police cruisers.

  • What a great collection of some rare classics, thanks for posting.

  • Wow... Oldsmobile was really deeply involved in law enforcement. That was an interesting video.

  • I like how you have all the specs on the cars in the info and great video olds power =}

  • Cool. I would look bad ass in one of those.
