After issuing calls for congressional hearings into Cpl. Pat Tillman's "friendly fire" death, I questioned Pentagon and Army officials, under oath, at a hearing of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Five official investigations over three years had all failed to address the most salient and basic issue: Who knew what, and when? I pressed the Army and Defense Department on why key evidence had disappeared, how eyewitness accounts of the battle had been altered, and, most importantly, why the Tillman family was, perhaps deliberately, misinformed about the cause of Cpl. Tillman's death.
So where was this so called "grilling" I didn't see it..?

Is a soldier more likely to die from friendly fire when he is known to differ from his comrades in some fundamental way? Is absolute cultural unity safer for a soldier's chance of survival? Statistically speaking, is it safe for a person of one persuasion to turn their back on a person of another (or opposite) persuasion in the heat of battle? Is combat more dangerous for minorities (blacks, atheists, women) who depend on others to have their back? What are the real numbers?
