Could a pet scanner coz of his higher resolution replace a gamma camera or are they limited to the applied tracers? So a pet scanner can´t detect gamma rays coming from technetium 99m which are important when scanning Thyroid.

It doesn't detect gamma radiation as such but the flashes of light when gamma fotons hit the NaI material.

gamma radiation has a unique energy for the type of radiation being detected. when the camera is set to see only this energy, a image is produced. the actual process is very involved. the easiest way to explain this to a patient is to tell them "we are taking an x-ray from the inside out."
