The M48 Patton was one of the U.S army's principal main battle tanks of the Cold War, with models in service from the early 1950s on through the 1990s. The M48 was the U.S. Army and Marine Corps primary tank during the Vietnam War. It was widely used by U.S. Cold War allies, especially other NATO countries. The tank belongs to the Patton family of tanks, named after General George S. Patton, commander of the U.S. Third Army during World War II and one of the earliest American advocates for the use of tanks in battle. It was a further development of the M47 Patton tank.
The M48 Patton tank was designed to replace the previous M47 Pattons and M4 Shermans. Although largely resembling the M47, the M48 Patton was a completely new tank design despite a rough similarity from a distance. Some M48A5 models served well into the 80s. Internationally, many various M48 Patton models remain in service. The M48 was the last American tank to mount the 90mm tank gun, and in fact later models were upgraded to carry the new standard weapon of 105mm.
M48A3K shifts the gasoline engine previously with the diesel engine, the muzzle brake was fitted 'T' form brake, added 3 support wheel and the fitted tank commander periscope on Turret, and M48A3K in M48A3 additionally to improve a smoke grenade launcher affix and a fire control system from Republic of Korea

@dlxowns322 yes i forgot they have K1 tanks, K2 is not in production yet, how ever i doubt it will be better than Abrams or Leopard any time soon.
but still most of thier tanks are Patton & M60 & K1, ROK should have some thing better, but they are not spending much on defence because they are relying on the US protection for now, so i understand why they are keeping this stone age weapons.

@Tihamah3 They do have much better tanks than this...
Search for K1 and K2 tanks. K1 by itself can fight against 10 North Korean tanks and win and K2 equals Leopard and M1A1 in its performance.

@XxxSakura101 i know it is modernised but still suck, with South Korea industrial and economical ability they should have some thing much better than that.

@Tihamah3 It's a highly modernised tank, much like the Soviet T-62s and T-72s. Periodically they slap new pannells guns, engines, and other parts on it to keep it competitive. It'store it's outdated, but don't forget modernized Sherman's annihilated Soviet T-55 tanks during the wars between Israel and it's neighbors.

The M-36 was a tank destroyer and not a tank.

@isuckaman Incorrect, the first fighting vehicle that had a 90mm in the US army was the M36.

A M48 might be old buts its better than no tank, in the last war the ROK fought they had no tanks at the start of the conflict.

South Koreans still using M48!!! i just feel so sorry for them, as a rich country they should have much better than 50 years old tank, no wonder then why North Korean's army with soviet junk from 60s'-50's can bully them.

The M-26 Pershing tank that came out late in WWll was the first tank to be fitted with a 90mm gun.
