how are you simply using the airport express? i was told by several individuals that express can only be used as a range extender if you having the apple extreme

It's a nice product but the 100 dollar price is way to much. My Gigabit router from Asus cost me 60 bucks.. and I have 2 USB ports on it. Granted it's not portable like Airport express, but I have a hard time justifying 100 dollars for something like that.
