Behind The Scenes - Mermaid Scales - Painting Silicone Appliances

Scales sculpted from plastalina non-sulfur modeling clay. A negative mold was made using ShellShock from Smooth-on. A silicone prosthetic was run using Skin Tite from Smooth-on. The appliances were painted using Temptu Dura pro palettes.

Is the silicone waterproof?? That might sound like a stupid question now that I think about it. Like if I wanted to make a mermaid fin to swim in could i use that??

@7d20 yes. The silicone is waterproof. I wouldn't recommend this particular kind of silicone though. Skin-tite has a very quick cure time, meaning it will start to solidify in minutes. You would be better trying something like Dragon-skin. Not only is it available in different degrees of rigidness, it is also available in different cure times. Working a larger mold, like a mermaid fin will require a longer cure time so you can create a proper appliance.

@7d20 If you do go this route, Keep in mind, this silicone is very very stretchy, you must account for this amount of stretch to have your fin fit properly. if the fin is too loose it will bubble up and trap water and air, and possibly slip off underwater, Good luck with your project and remember.... always use caution when swimming with an underwater appliance. Check out a website called "mernetwork", they have some pretty good information about building a fin.

@bcori1999 I order the Temptu palettes from Frends Beauty supply. They are based out of Los Angeles. Each palette is $69. When you order yours, be sure to buy 99% alcohol, this is what activates the pigments. They are much like watercolor cakes everyone used as children. You add the alcohol and thin it to the consistency you want and paint. They will not come off on clothes or with water. The same alcohol is used to remove the pigments from skin.
