Released in 2008 on Ghostly International.

The Sight Below is a one man operation. Who that man is remains a mystery. He performs all his songs live and lives in Seattle. He makes ambient / experimental music using his guitar and a laptop.

TSB makes very slow moving, airy, ethereal music. The sounds found on here a very much so like floating around in the atmosphere. Little swirls and geysers of sounds come in and out of the mist. Everything is carried and floats over this consistent 4/4 beat.

The beat sound very much so like a pulse or a heartbeat. It is very deep and murky, but prominently shown in the mix. Sounds are invariably layered and looped and distorted to create both subtle textures and walls of tone. Sometimes they are produced to accumulate into small climaxes.

The music on here follows these themes throughout the album. TSB does an effective job rearranging and recontextualizing these ideas to keep the album provocative and engaging. Good music for people who like their music to envelop them and carry them away.

Not 100% original in concept and not too varied in execution, but it is a very enjoyable listen nonetheless.

3.8/5

  • '08? How did I miss this!?

  • Snooze you loose, Fantano !

  • I love how you're so specific with your ratings [3.8/5]

Is that the Sight Below playing in the background?

  • Yeah, I always play the music off the album in the background.

A 3.8 is what Anthony Fantano would call "A strong 7, almost a light 8"

  • why does ghostly disappoint you?

  • Hahah. I said "rarely" disapoints me, not "really". Ghostly is probably one of my top record labels to buy from.

  • @itsCRACKf00 yes, but most of his work is darker, more contemplating, somehow he chose his most light work.

  • i like to kinda compare this album alot to Sigur Rós' "()", very ethereal, cerebral and very spacious. i WOULD say it is cold and barren but let's use some better words: icy and vast. and i love how that as soon as i get tired of a song, it ends or it's nearing the end.

  • god this album is so amazing. i do know this: no synths were used making this.

  • ohh, that clears it up then. i was wondering why you were doing a ghostly release review if you didn't like the label.

    good review by the way
