«The Dark Side of Empire» is part of the project named «The second discovery of the North». It is devoted to investigation and reconstruction of the Great Northern Way that connected Asia and Northern Europe for centuries.
The second chapter named «Protracted picnic» tells us about the most deserted and uninhabited part of the Great Northern Way that Soviet regime transformed into testing area for impracticable projects.
The attempts of turning the river channels, hapless project «Taiga», nuclear explosions and nuclear landmines that are placed beneath the surface, uninhabited settlements -- they are all heritage of the outgoing age. The fantastic world described in Tarkovskiy's film «Stalker» turns into reality on the lands of ancient Biarmia.
