The Communications Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada shut down the Ford Oakville assembly plant earlier this month. The plant is the home of the new Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX. The plant was paralized for a few days costing Ford millions of dollars of lost production. The Union was succesful in negotiating improved job security for it's members as well as addressing other issues. Part of the job security issue is a commitment by Ford to look at building a new Co-Generation facility to provide electricity, heat, and possibly cooling for the assembly plant. This would bring the facility into the 21 century. This is good news for the community of Oakville, the environment, Ontario's economy and for the future of the facility. Ford would also benefit from tremendously reduced energy costs. This is a step in the right direction if we are to meet our commitments under the Kyoto protocol. It would also be a very significant contribution to energy conservation for the province and save Ford millions of dollars annually. The plant would produce enough electricity to power between 40,000 and 60,000 homes. This is significant given the current state of electricity supply in Ontario.
