Song Lyrics: Maggie May by Rod Stewart
Written by: Rod Stewart, Martin Quittenton from the Album: "Every Picture Tells A Story" - 1971
Wake up Maggie I think I got something to say to you
It's late September and I really should be back at school
I know I keep you amused but I feel I'm being used
Oh Maggie I couldn't have tried any more
You lured me away from home just to save you from being alone
You stole my heart and that's what really hurt
The morning sun when it's in your face really shows your age
But that don't worry me none in my eyes you're everything
I laughed at all of your jokes my love you didn't need to coax
Oh, Maggie I couldn't have tried any more
You lured me away from home, just to save you from being alone
You stole my soul and that's a pain I can do without
All I needed was a friend to lend a guiding hand
But you turned into a lover and
mother what a lover, you wore me out
All you did was wreck my bed
and in the morning kick me in the head
Oh Maggie I couldn't have tried anymore
You lured me away from home 'cause you didn't want to be alone
You stole my heart I couldn't leave you if I tried
I suppose I could collect my books and get on back to school
Or steal my daddy's cue and make a living out of playing pool
Or find myself a rock and roll band that needs a helpin' hand
Oh Maggie I wish I'd never seen your face
You made a first-class fool out of me
But I'm as blind as a fool can be
You stole my heart but I love you anyway
Maggie I wish I'd never seen your face
I'll get on back home one of these days
Rod Stewart was born and grew up in London, although with his Scottish accent and tartan clothing you would think that he was Scottish. His parents are mixed Scottish and English.
With his distinctive, raspy voice, Rod Stewart became noticed in the late 1960s and early '70s with The Jeff Beck Group and then The Faces and began a solo career in 1969.
It is amazing what you learn doing research for a lens. Rod played with a band called Shotgun Express in the early 1960's, members of which included Mick Fleetwood and Peter Green, who went on to form Fleetwood Mac, and also Pete Bardens, who will not be known to most of you, unless you are familiar with the rock group Camel.
Stewart sang guest vocals for the Australian group Python Lee Jackson on "In a Broken Dream" in 1970. His payment was a set of seat covers for his car. It was re-released in 1972 to become a worldwide hit.
His solo album Every Picture Tells A Story made him a household name when Maggie May hit the charts. It is still even now ranked as one of the top 500 songs that helped shape rock and roll.
Rod has gone on to record many other great hits, both upbeat rock songs and ballads, and more recently has recorded an album of great American songs from the like of Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and George Gershwin.

This takes me back to late summber 72. Me and 2 friends were walking back to Torquay from a campsite miles out of town. it was before dawn, and we had to get the bus home. we sang this at the top of our voices many times, as we trudged through the deserted roads. Was it really nearly 40 years ago? THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, Pez and Pegg.
