maybe you can help me. I JUST heard a Woody Herman song on the radio. It was from the album "Keep the Torchlighht Burning." It had a lot of scat and vibes toward the end. Any idea what song this might be?

This is the tune that got me into jazz! I was a beginning sax player in 1966 and stumbled on Wood Hermans album of 1963 in my grandparents record cabinet. When I heard this song and Sal's solos I knew there was more to music and have spent the last 42 years going for it.

Thanks for the video of a tune I have listened to for the last forty-two years.

All of the Herman videos are after the Bill Harris era. He played the best tronbone ever and was such an interesting character. I wish I could find more info on him.

@saxhonkinhogger I too am a recovering saxophoner & feel your pain. I remember listening to Woody Herman records on my grandpa's console stereo. I had the privilege of attending a clinic at Del City High School when I was in Jr. High in the early 70's. It was one of the high points of my musical life for sure. It was nice that someone as famous & great as Mr. H. gave back like he did. I always had extra great respect for him after that.  Thanks BCDS for keeping his music alive & accessible.

One of Woody's best pieces, from what is surely his best album, "Woody Herman - 1963." That Bill Chase chart swings like a ten-foot chandelier and jumps like a swordfish.

I've never noticed anyone's neck expand the way Bill Chase's does. Man, he must have put put every ounce of energy into that horn! BTW, what does Sal find so amusing? Cracks me up!
