Once upon a time, long ago, two young lovers vowed undying love to each other. But their love was doomed, for the beautiful young girl's father forbade their love, and told her that she was the daughter of a rich nobleman and she could not marry where she pleased; and certainly she could not marry a poor farmer's son as her heart wished, but must marry the son of another nobleman to bring honour and advantage to her family.
Broken-hearted she told her lover of her father's words, for she was an obedient daughter. As the two young lovers leaned towars each other for one last kiss, the girl plucked a Sakura blossom from her hair and made a wish on it that she and her love could stay there in that embrace for ever. Taking pity on them, the spirit of the Sakura granted her wish and turned the two young lovers into twin Sakura trees. They stand to this day locked in their lovers' embrace, their branches growing and twining with the other's. Each Spring young girls visit the trees and wish on the falling blossoms that they too might soon find their one true love.
