  • Great tune. I remember "Cobby Cad" (er, sorry, my Welk accent) was one of the tunes featured on the Dot (& later Ranwood) Winchester Cathedral record. Performers Frank Scott, harpsicord, Neil Levang, guitar, Bob Havens, trombone, Bob Ralston (forget the name of this thing!), Russ Klein, clarinet, Dick Cathcart and Charlie Parlato, trumpets.

  • The Dot "Winchester Cathedral" album was one of the first records my parents ever bought when they got their RCA Console in 1966. I still love this song. Strange it took 2-3 years before it was ever released on a album. I wonder who was the drummer?

  • "Winchester Cathedral" album (which included "Copy Cat") was probably in 1967. The original "Winchester Cathedral" song was a hit for New Vaudeville Band in late 1966, near the time "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys was also a hit.

  • @wildbilltexas I'd heard the same thing, about Welk supplementing the band with extra studio help for recordings. But, on the show, the only one who was ever there playing was John Klein, so that's most likely the case here.

  • @librarybob1958 Thanks for that info. I read a long time ago that studio musicians played on most of Welk's albums (guess I was wrong).

I always assumed one of the LA "Wrecking Crew" greats like Hal Blaine or Earl Palmer with a Rock or R&B background might have played on this.

  • @wildbilltexas That was long-time Welk drummer John Klein. He retired after a 1976 heart attack to become the band's librarian, whereupon Paul Humphrey, the only other (along with Arthur Duncan) Person of Color in the Welk organization, took over as drummer until Lawrence retired in 1982.

  • @romeman01 It's called a clavietta, one of the first instruments I ever learned to play.

  • YOUNG BOB RALSTON!

  • Wunnerful....Wunnerful....the boys are on top of their game!
