1925 JD 1-1/2 HP John Deere Model E(BRASS TAG) powers 1966 JD 110 garden tractor. The apparatus attached to the side is a little air pump just in case some one at the Tennessee Valley Pioneer Power engine show needs to pump a tire!!

  • I love hit-and-miss engines, simply for the novelty of an eight-stroke engine.

    A 8-cylinder hit-and-miss could be as smooth as a 4-stroke 4-cylinder. Not that it'd have much point, other than maybe fuel consumption and the novelty.

  • @SirVladDracula , I have several and only need as many as I can haul to a show(so says the wife). These type engines are just not as efficient as modern engines but they are cool to listen to and marvel at their mechanical construction.

  • @popnstart Oh, I agree completely;

    but they're wonderful machines for all they're worth.

    It's like custom choppers; they're not quick motorcycles, they're not practical, and they lack any other real use than to exist aesthetically. And yet, people still own them, sometimes numerous in number.

    Sometimes, the sheer joy of something outweighs the metaphorical scaffolding holding up the walls of realism. ;) Because sometimes, practicality just isn't as fun as a wow-factor.

  • @SirVladDracula , the old engines AND the old farm equipment they powered makes me think of the simpler times(but tougher times) and how we all take electricity in our homes for granted.

  • So, what's the point of the H&M. Fuel efficient or less complex or what's the deal. It's definitely neat with that mellow idle.

  • @ETThExtraTerrestrial , H n M engines were simpler to make as far as carbs are concerned and were some of the early versions of IC engines. They just used the simple needle valve for fuel delivery. They are not as smooth as TG(throttle governed) engines introduced later on mainly used to burn kerosene. TG engines have the butterfly carb. H and M engines are not very fuel efficient compared to TG engines, because of the power required to suck air back and forth thru the exhaust during operation.

  • @popnstart Your yard must be pretty big then. It'd mow mine and not break a sweat.

  • @TestECull , thanks for your enthusiasm but I'm thinkin' that my 20HP V-Twin Briggs turning 3600 rpm would do a much better job than the JD one-lunger 1-1/2 HP turning 600 rpm. It would boil the water in the hopper away after 2 passes of cutting grass around the house. Later.

  • @popnstart I honestly think the torque would make up for it. Torque is what you want when pulling anyways. HP is just an arbitrary number spat out by an equation anyways.

    Coupled with a hydrostatic, honestly, I think it would pull a mower fine.
